SDHCA Dakota MasterWorks Art Show

We welcome you to enter the SDHCA Dakota MasterWorks Art Show for South Dakota residents age 60 and older. Entrants can be nursing home residents, staff, or anyone from the community! You just need to be a SD citizen and at least 60 years old!
Entries are accepted in the following categories: Oil, Acrylic, Watercolor, Drawing/Pastels, Photography, Mixed Media (see rules), Wood Carving. Click here and provide your mailing address to receive the brochure with complete details of entering.

• Experienced: age 60–79
• Masters: 80 plus
$15.00 per entry is due upon submitting the artwork
to cover rentals, insurance and handling fees. No more
than two entries per artist may be submitted. The entry
must have been completed within the last three years.
Original pieces only. The following will not be allowed
as an entry in the Art Show: No kit assembled products,
furniture, carved jewelry, decorative signage, nude
works, commercially mass-produced items, and no
pieces entered previously may be re-entered.
ENTRY AND RELEASE:
All entries, along with the Entry Form, will be accepted
Monday, October 2 through Friday, October 6
between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Entries must include a
brief biographical profi le and a release authorizing the
SDHCA to reproduce any winning entry for promotional
purposes without compensation to the artist. The release
form must be submitted with the entry and be on fi le
prior to judging.
All non-winning entries are to be picked up within
30 days after the Sioux Falls show. Items not retrieved
in 30 days following the show will be considered
abandoned. Due to space restrictions, original
packaging materials may not be returned. SDHCA
suggests entrants take packaging home with them
when dropping off entries.

First, Second and Third Place cash awards will be
given in each category. In addition, judges will select a
Best of Show. The public will also be invited to vote for
the People’s Choice award to be presented following the
show. Categories and entry specifi cations are:
• Painting (oil)
• Painting (acrylic)
• Painting (watercolor)
All paintings—size limited to no larger than
30" X 45" framed, 2-dimensional only.
Size limited to no larger than 30" X 45" framed,
• Photography (black and white or color)
Size limited to no larger than 30" X 45" framed,
• Mixed Media
Limited to a mixture of 2 or more of the following—
Oil paint, acrylic paint, watercolor paint, pencils and
photography. 2-dimensional only (no shadow boxes).
Size limited to no larger than 30" X 45" framed.
• Wood Carving*
Size limited to no larger than 2' X 2'. Weight limited
to no more than 50 lbs. For larger objects, a color
photo may be substituted. No kits.
* According to the National Wood Carvers Association,
there are no required set of rules or guidelines that
every show must follow. Therefore, allowing each show
to set its own rules. The SDHCA Dakota MasterWorks
Art Show was created to focus on positive aging and
the creativity of seniors. To pursue this endeavor, this
Show includes Wood Crafts in the Wood Carving
category and will be judged as one category.
The following will not be allowed as an entry in the Art
Show: No Kits. No Furniture. No Carved Jewelry. No
Decorative Signage. No Nude Works.
All entries must be within size and weight limitations
unless pre-approved by the SDHCA Dakota MasterWorks
Committee. All two dimensional entries must be framed
with fl at screw plates and wires for hanging. Entries
and artists may be featured in future SDHCA Dakota
MasterWorks promotional materials and products.
Therefore, all entries will require a release authorizing
SDHCA Dakota MasterWorks or its assignees to utilize
a reproduction of winning entries and an artist profi le
in promotional literature and materials. Promotional
designs are left to the professional designers.

Judging will take place in Sioux Falls prior to the
exhibit. Judges are appointed based on their talent
and expertise. Award categories are:
• Best of Show.
• First through Third Place in each age division and
• People’s Choice Award—based on votes of those
attending the exhibit.
The First Place winners in each category will receive a
check for $75; Second Place, $50, and Third Place, $25.
The Best of Show and People’s Choice will each receive
an award of $100.
First, Second, Third, Best of Show and People’s Choice
winning entries will be exhibited at various sites in South
Dakota through January 2018.
