Session Description: According to the National Survey of Residential Care Facilities, almost 42% of residents have Alzheimer’s Disease or other type of dementia. This number could drastically rise with the expected increase in number of persons with dementia in the next four decades. The use of off-label antipsychotics in persons with dementia has gained national attention. Focusing on non-pharmacologic interventions is important to providing person-centered care. Safely reducing the off-label use of antipsychotics is one of the four goals for the AHCA/NCAL Quality Initiative for Assisted Living. Listen to providers who have been successful in safely reducing the use of off-label antipsychotics. Understand the risks of off-label use of antipsychotics in older populations and learn about non-pharmacologic interventions that have been successful in assisted living.
Learning Objectives:
1. Describe the risks associated with off-label use of antipsychotics in persons with dementia.
2. Describe non-pharmacologic interventions for persons with dementia.
3. Understand how communities have successfully and safely reduced off-label use of antipsychotics
